Fiberglass is showing on my shingles

Writer: Jerad FowlerJerad Fowler

If you see fiberglass showing on your shingles, it means the protective granules on your roof have worn away, exposing the underlying fiberglass mat, which is a sign that your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan and likely needs to be replaced soon; this is considered a serious issue as the exposed fiberglass leaves your roof vulnerable to leaks and further damage.

Key points to remember:

  • What it means:

The fiberglass mat is the structural base of a shingle, and when it becomes visible, it indicates significant granule loss and deterioration of the asphalt layer.

  • How to identify:

Look for shiny patches or visible fiberglass threads, especially on the edges of the shingles, which can be seen from the ground, particularly when the sun is shining on the roof.

  • What to do:

Contact a roofing professional for a thorough inspection to assess the extent of the damage and determine if repairs are possible or if a complete roof replacement is necessary.
